Pulling Out All the Stops: A Hammond Organ Concert at Strathmore
Keyboardist Chris Hon celebrates one of his favorite instruments in the keyboard family: the Hammond organ. Originally designed as an affordable substitute for the pipe organ, the Hammond has carved out a rich musical legacy of its own, shaping genres from gospel to jazz and beyond. In this program, Chris explores the organ’s many configurations, from the iconic organ trio to its power as a solo instrument and its soulful, funky sound within an ensemble.
How Sound Works, a Strathmore AIR Workshop
Since the 1970s, synthesizers have allowed musicians to “build” sounds from the ground up, bringing them out of our minds and into reality. However, doing so requires an understanding of sound characteristics and how to shape them. Keyboardist Chris Hon leads an analytical yet concrete demonstration, breaking down how sound works and how it can be manipulated to mimic familiar instruments or invent entirely new ones.
